It speaks for terroir and how more people understand that wine should taste like where it came from-not from some other iconic region-which is the point of all wine.”
This speaks to how local producers were smart enough to adapt technology and best practices to their viticulture. Yet today, top-quality wine is made in much of the country. “In the 1990s, no one was supposed to be able to grow quality grapes east of the Rocky Mountains, what with weather, disease, and soil problems. “I always smile at the success of local wine in the US,” says wine writer Jeff Siegel, who co-founded Drink Local Wine, the first locavore wine group, along with Washington Post columnist Dave McIntyre. And while it has lagged, wine from all over the country is beginning to gain some well-deserved recognition. The idea to seek out regional American wines has been a topic steadily growing in interest as local food, craft beer, and spirits have driven the conversation in American dining culture. Earlier this year, I dove into a few American wine regions, both large and small, to get a pulse on the state of the wine being made in regions other than California, Washington, and Oregon.
